OK let's give details of what I am using:
(a) latest download of Gallery3
(b) Win XP & Win2000 - tried on 2 different machines with the same results
(c) JPEG images from a Canon 50D and these do everything perfectly, whether they were shot in JPEG or were shot in Raw and converted to JPEG they gave the same result. That is they worked beautifully in Gallery.
(d) A Canon FS4000US slide scanner. With which i had scanned in a number 35mm slides and saved the images as JPEG.

As I said above the images from my Canon camera worked a treat.

The images from the slide scanner are OK if you select a single. You can click on an image and view it full screen with no problems at all. But when you go into slide show mode the images do not resize and you see on the screen a small part of the image highly magnified.

Anyone got any ideas?

Bill

Yes Dave I was going to upload an image or two but wasn't sure that anyone would be interested.

Oops now when I try to upload them they are bigger than 1mb so they won't upload. Leave it with me for a while and I will drop the JPEG quality down until they are < 1mb.

I will get this done today.

cheers Dave.

Right Dave I put these down to the lowest JPEG quality that Photoshop offers.

FAQ: Why can't I upload big files (over a megabyte or two)?

And if that doesn't fix it then, it's probably your server choking under heavy handed resource restrictions.

Images work for me so it is not the image(s)
Most likely some resource issue on your server.
Try a different image toolkit as well as the suggesting Kevin made.

Sorry Dave I am not with you at all.

(a) who is Kevin and what is his suggestion?
Ha, answer my own question here. Kevin is nivekiam - right? i am kevin - fairly obvious I suppose lol.

Actually you have both missed something in my original post when I said images from my Canon 50D work absolutely fine, ie they resize perfectly. These images are much larger than the images that do not work. Sorry maybe you are not familiar with the Canon 50D, but the images are around 7 to 8 mb. The images that do not work, ie ones produced from my film scanner are approx. 2.5mb only.

Kevin the issue with the 1mb was not gallery3 but the forum upload. The forum will not upload an image larger than 1mb, nothing to do with gallery3.

(b) what is an image toolkit?

(c) my server had got very little running on it, so I would be surprised if it's a resource issue, especially as images with larger filesize work perfectly.

How many pixels wide and tall are those images you scan in?

Can I make another quick point.

The problem images display perfectly well if I simply click on them. It is when I ask the system to go into a slideshow that the problems start. When it goes into the slideshow it tells me it is opening CoolIris.

Dave when you say the images were fine did you mean when a slideshow was initiated? Or just displaying them?

Had a thought.....I will try the troublesome images in CoolIris but by calling it from the QNAP multimedia screen...Hang on...

In CoolIris the images are fine. I get the screen up that looks like a perishing iPhone and CoolIris slideshow mode works perfectly for all my iamges.

Can you tell me what happens in gallery3 when you call up CoolIris? The reason I ask is twofold:

(a) You don't get the perishing iPhone scroll screen as you do in CoolIris used directly, and
(b) CoolIris (current version) will not run with PCs using Win2000 OS, but when I use gallery3 on a win2000 machine it behaves exactly the same as an XP PC. That is my 50D images work perfectly and the others don't.

The plot thickens.

In Photoshop 7 the Canon 50D images, ie the ones that work give:

Width: 4752 pixels
Height: 3168 pixels

Doument Size
Width: 66 in
height: 44 in
resolution: 72 pixels/inch

This is also the canvas size. ie the ones that don't work give:

The images from the film scanner are:

Width: Width: 5463 pixels
Height: 3558 pixels

Doument Size
Width: 1.366 in
Height: 0.89 in
Resolution: 4000 pixels per inch.

Must admit I didn't expect results like that. Obviously the size is sort of irrelevant, just changing to suit the reolution depending on the entered size. Bit like like time in Special Relativity.

But these are very dfferent.

It is the program on the server that Gallery uses to resize the images to create a thumb and resize image.
Admin -> settings -> graphics.
Gallery uses one or three different toolkits. Perhaps the image toolkit you are using does not support the item you are trying to add.
When I say it works for me:
http://www.langleycom.com/gallery3/index.php/Test1/w2-02
I can add the item and thumb and resize are generated.

But does it work in slideshow mode?

I will check which toolkit I am using tomorrow.

Cheers Dave

OK guys looking at the graphics settings I see the the only loaded kit I have is GD because I see the message:

Quote:
You have GD version bundled (2.0.34 compatible).

Now I am new to all this Linux stuff and looking through the info on installing other graphic kits looks a bit daunting. So I might wait a bit until I understand a little more.

That is, of course, you reccomend using one of the other grahics kits.

If the other(s) are available to use I would choose either one of them. GD is a memory hog and shares it memory usage with php.
Ask you host if they can install IM for you if you can't.

Thanks Dave.

The NAS I am using is a new piece of kit I have just purchased for our home use plus some use for my home office (SOHO). So unfortunately I will need to install onto the NAS myself.

As I say I will read around the subject until the installation notes make sense.

Thanks again Dave.

Right Dave.

I installed ImageMagick from the QNAP management interface and followed the instructions given by someone on a QNAP forum.

(1) So installed the package using QNAPS QPKG system
(2) using Putty I opened a terminal session logged in as admin
(3) ipkg update
(4) ipkg install imagemagick
(5) ipkg files imagemagick - to find out where it had been installed
(6) ipkg upgrade

This all seemed to go well, that is to say that the NAS is still working.

I then loaded gallery3, without a server reboot and went in to settings->graphics. But GD was still the only package actually installed.

So I went into advanced settings and changed:

graphics_toolkit -> imagemagick
graphics_toolkit_path -> /opt/share/doc/ImageMagick-6.6.9/ - which is where it seems to be installed
But still it does not find the toolkit.

Any ideas Dave.

In fact the binaries are stored in:

/share/MD0_DATA/.qpkg/Optware/bin

and i have entered that in graphics_toolkit_path but again it makes no difference.

I'm no expert in this so I will let other chime in.
Does not sound like a default setting that is common.

I'm no expert either, but...

I'm done. These things are a major PITA and I don't have access to one to try and even begin troubleshooting.

Bill, were you ever able to sort this out? I'm having exactly the same problem, on a windows-based system.
