Can I erase "resize" folder?

I have a question about "var/resizes" folder.
Can you tell me what is the role of this folder?
My albums are in "var/albums" and the "var/resizes" folder is (I think) absolutely the same as the first one.
I don't resize my photos inside my gallery because I always resize it on my local computer before uploading.
So - Can I delete it without any bad results?
I want to recapture some free space on my server :)
