Help: cant load index page, auto upgrading for no reason

Hello, My url is www.farhan-tauheed.com I dont want to upgrade since I made some changes in the core "hacks" and dont want them to be overwritten. -Farhan Sorry I cant access my admin pages either to give more information |

I've seen that happen when g2data/version.dat either goes missing or permissions are set such that Gallery can't read it.
First check that it exists in your g2data directory.

thanks for the quick reply.
the version.dat is there and It had write and read permission.
I've changed it to full access but that didnt solve the problem
the site is still redirecting and not showing my original front page

Usually means something somewhere has changed if it was working well before.
Run a recursive chown on the gallery2 folder if you can.
Alternatively, take a backup of the folder and database and then go through the upgrade process ... just tell it to reuse the database and data.
I think I have done this before more than once in my time using G2 and my hacks came out of the other end intact. It basically realises everything is fine somewhere along the line. Make sure you back up though.

So yes im digging a bit more now.. seems like im screwed really bad.
upgrading seems like a scary option, but i guess ill have to do it as a last resort.

So I tried doing recursive permission settings
and Now every file and folder inside g2data is with 777 permission.
However i still get "parent directory could not be created" .. i don't understand whats going on ..
can some one think of any other problem?
is there any way to clear cache data without going in the admin menu? (i cant even get to the admin menu)

I asked the webserver support and they told me the folder had wrong permission for some reason
however now the permission is fixed and its a blank page!

http://www.farhan-tauheed.com/ is now giving a 500 internal server error.
Have you looked at the actual server log? Most hosts provide access to logs for owned domains.

The web server guys are just not helping they say " the web application is responsible for the problem "
and that " there is a script in the application which is changing the permission of the files and folders"
which in my opinion does not seems like the case

im sorry my knowledge with web servers is limited. so didnt understand your question
my g2data reside in the folder /g2data
for me its the root
but for the server its
/hermes/web01/b1585/moo.farhaneee/g2data
I dont know if its publicly available
doing www.farhan-tauheed.com/g2data
shows a webpage with warning that i dont have an index file
however writing a complete url

to one of images in the folder of g2data also shows the same warning file
should I change the permission to something else?
also should I proceed with the upgrade? I got this message

try changing directories to 755
find . -type d -print0 | xargs -0 chmod 0755
in your g2data directory.

I use a visual filezilla ftp client I dont think i can run this command on it.
can i just do a recursive chmod to 0755?

Actually, before you go too far, why not just roll back to Thursday's or last week's backup??

Yes I checked it .. I dont have backup service of files just the database. for files apparently i needed to pay extra.. I hate these morons!
gona switch over from fatcow!! hate them.
so now i've changed all folders to 0755 and files to 777 in g2data
still the site upgrade fails, and im stuck
even with all files and folders to 0755 it fails
im screwed.. i cant see my webpage.. cant upgrade .. cant restore
its horrible.. and i just cant even think what went wrong/
last activity i did was to make a new album and added items through local server transfere.
it worked fine at that time. next day it just wont do any thing.. kept redirecting to upgrade, and giving this cannot create folder error in debug messages
i didnt touch the code for 6 months.

As long as they told you this from the beginning, I don't see this as their fault.
Try to manually delete everything in your "g2data/cache/" folder apart from "g2data/cache/derivative" and then run the upgrade again.
Or better, move them out of the g2data folder so you can put them back if required..

surprisingly nothing changes: I've tried clearing the cache and make sure the files are not ther

Shows that you still have a permission issue.
Ask your host for help. What you need to ask for is simple ... G2data folder and ALL subfolders and files should be made read/writable by the webserver user.

FINALLY its fixed..
and yes it happened because of my stupidity
Actually in my config.php
I put the absolute path of g2data folder, cause /g2data/ didnt work
$gallery->setConfig('data.gallery.base', '/hermes/web01/b1585/moo.farhaneee/g2data/');
but 3 days back my webserver people decided to change the document root to
/home/users/web/b1585/moo.farhaneee
and hence my app could not find G2Data
is there a way to put a relative path so it doesn't happen again? something like /documentRoot/g2data

Nice to know it is back up and running.
Main lesson to learn is that whenever the application "suddenly" stops working, it is because someone has suddenly changed something.
