first, let me just say im really impressed so far with gallery3, however i seem to have a couple issues configuring my install. i think my problems are because im used to gallery2, so maybe i just cant find what im looking for - these seem like basic questions, so i have to assume the functionality is there. if you can help at all, i'd really appreciate it!

o - full size images
is there any way to restrict the size of "full size", or just remove them after they create the sizes i want? gallery2 allowed me to saw how big the biggest could be, and made sure everything conformed. Gallery3 seems to let me set my resizes, but keeps the full size whatever it was uploaded at. i can make sure i dont make them bigger than a certain size when uploading, but it makes merging my old files really difficult, and makes it less "turn-key". is there a module or something? i had hoped that the "rebuild items" module would do it, but it seems to not affect the originals.

o - gallery and folder highlight image
there simply must be a better way to set the highlight images for folders and subfolders - currently, the only way ive found is set it for each subfolder first, then set the subfolder for the main folder's highlight. this is really cumbersome and makes it so that the main folder must have the same highlight as a subfolder (which isnt usually what i would like), and gallery2 had a much better solution where it asked which folder it was within to make it the highlight for (for this folder, or the parent folder, etc). i think i can "trick" gallery3 by setting the parent folder highlight to be the same as a subfolder, and then changing the subfolder - but there must be an easier way for something this basic.

o - side box/full size
full size images seem to still be below the side box/bar. is there any way to either get rid of or maybe collapse the side bar?

i think thats it - thanks!

Album options > Edit permissions

No, they can't be removed as that's what is used if you ever have to rebuild or resize your thumbs or resized images.

Right now, no. I think even in G2, that requires an additional module. If you're up for digging around under gallery3/var/ you could manually put an .album.jpg file that would be your thumbnail highlight for an album.

Got a link you can share to show an example?

ugh, really? man, that stinks... i dont remember installing a special module to allow better highlighting, but i did configure that gallery many years ago. at least there's a realatively understandable workaround, i can live with that.

i noticed it does it on the large size too, so you should be able to see the effect i mean right away. thanks for the help! btw, if you have any thoughts for things i obviously still need to do, fire away.

Ah, it's the theme you're using. It's not designed for resizes that large. Either modify the theme, or use a different theme. I believe there is one called Wide Wind and if you want a dark theme, Greydragon should fit the bill.

wide wind still seems to be leaving the side bar overlaying the image, i tried the click4next version too just in case. also, i dont see an area to select greydragon in the theme options, is it something i need to manually enter?

Check here:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Category:Gallery_3:Themes

However, it may still just get down to that you need a bigger monitor or to change the theme as you need. Those images are big and take up a lot of screen real estate and that right menu floats to the right so it's going to continue to float over the photo unless you modify the CSS.

I know that I'm only familiar with about half of the available modules. I was trying to think of a way to make them more easily searchable (for someone totally new to Gallery3) but didn't come up with anything better than what's already happening.

I'll echo @nivekiam: "it may still just get down to that you need a bigger monitor"

It looks fine if you modify the monitor to a higher resolution. The theme looks like it expands based on the monitor, i.e. variable width; that's why I didn't initially understand what the problem was. That said, I don't know if a new theme will help much. You should likely just make smaller resizes and allow larger sizes in the popup. As a reference, I normally design for 1024px width (minus scrollbars, etc) because it's a fairly common size.

You could maybe edit the css to add a max-width, but I don't think that's 100% supported yet.

actually, i seem to have everything in place for new stuff via modules. i see what you are saying about the side bar, i dont mind it too much, and if it really bugs me ill look at the css. the only problem is the first couple sets of images i uploaded, its not resizing them retroactively, but i can just reupload them.

just that one module... hm, maybe i got an old version or something, im going to look at that thread further.

thanks again for all the help!

There was a suggestion by a user that was going to implement a table with G2 and G3 modules for caparison and some short description about each module and categorize the modules as well. But like most users that say they are going to do something, they don't.
There is only so much we can do and we have to prioritize things.
Glad you are helping out in the forums.

Dave

yup - the correct module was further down the page.

you know... really, just a better system for linking the correct files (rather than just referencing the forum thread), and maybe adding a tooltip that displayed the description for the module on the module index page (the same basic description you get when you click the link) would really solve the problem, but thats just my humble opinion. ::shrug::

thank you again for all the help!

Just that simple eh?
I don't think I have the skill to do that on the codex page. Perhaps you can?
the http://www.gallerymodules.com/ page has.
